It might be hard to believe that I’m already giving up on a New Year’s resolution, but then again… maybe you’re right there with me. Seriously, it’s not even February and my life-changing commitment has already fallen by the wayside. But why? I’ve found the reason and if you’ve ever given up on a commitment, you did it for the same reason…

I just don’t feel like doing it anymore.

Isn’t that why we all stop doing whatever it is we stop doing? We just don’t feel like doing it anymore!

Why didn’t you go running today? I didn’t feel like it.

Why did you stop your weekly blogging? I didn’t feel like it.

Why did you eat drive-through food instead of cooking at home? I didn’t feel like it.

Why didn’t you go to the gym after work? I didn’t feel like it.

Why didn’t you clean your room? I didn’t feel like it.

Why didn’t you turn off the TV and pick up that book? I didn’t feel like it.

As much as I’d like to think my decisions are logical, they’re really just about my feelings. Then you know what I do? I come up with a logical reason to support my poor-feeling decision. Somehow I feel like some stretch of logic will justify my lack of doing.

What Can We Do?

Three things we can do to outsmart our feelings and reach our goals. These three areas of focus help by making it easier, supporting you, and kicking you in the butt when it needs to be kicked.

First, Let’s Make it Easier

I’ve written about Dr. BJ Fogg before in my blogs. He’s dedicated his career to studying motivation and personal achievement. He’s most known for helping people achieve by developing what he calls tiny habits.

We can make our achievements easier by focusing on developing tiny habits first. Don’t make your first step too big or you’re more likely to give up on the enormity of the task. I’m reminded of the Bill Murray movie called “What About Bob.” Bill Murray’s character learns how to live a full life by taking baby steps toward his goals. Make sure you have some tiny goals to start. Let’s get a quick win!

Second, Let’s Get Some Help

Kerry Patterson is the author of several books, one of which is called Change Anything. In his research he has found there are 6 elements of support required for us to achieve anything. These 6 break down into two categories: people and tools.

People:

Yourself (you’ve got to believe!)

Cheerleader (your friends)

Coach (someone to hold you accountable and offer guidance)

Tools:

Information and tools (books, YouTube videos, DIY, Blogs, smart phone app)

Organized Group Sharing (Weight Watchers, book club, discussion groups)

Environment or System (organized classes, run club, structured eating plan, pre-defined shopping lists)

Third, kick your own butt

Mel Robbins is the author of The 5 Second Rule. What she found is that sometimes you just need to kick your own butt to defeat the “I don’t feel like it” excuse.

When we don’t feel like starting, we don’t. When we have an impulse or idea to progress toward a goal, we need to act on it… within 5 seconds. If we allow the “I don’t feel like it” feeling to stall us, it will recruit the brain to come up with a logical excuse within 5 seconds. If we don’t take action within 5 seconds of the impulse, we’re doomed. The feeling wins again.

So what am I going to do about my situation?

Well, I’m not going to wait until next year to start over again. It’s time to start over again… and that’s okay. I’m taking a mulligan.

Knowing I will eventually hit a wall and I won’t feel like doing it anymore, I’m going to approach it in three steps:

Pick a small step to start with (don’t run 10 miles on your first day… why not just walk 1 mile?) I’ll leverage the Tiny Habits approach from Dr. BJ Fogg.

Make a plan to enlist all 6 support elements Kerry Patterson describes.

When I don’t feel like doing it, I’m going to count down 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and then say “Go!” to get past those hurdles. Time to kick my own butt.

Life’s failures are the learning lessons on the road to success. As Alfred (Michael Kane) in The Dark Knight movie says to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), “Why do we fall sir? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” It’s time for me to get back up. If you’ve stumbled too, I invite you to join me.

If your New Year’s Resolutions aren’t where you want them to be… it’s not too late. Get up. Time to reset. Start over. It’s okay to take a mulligan. You can have a do over, and I’ll take one too. Seriously, if Batman gets a do over, so do we!

See you next week… that is… if I feel like blogging.
Just kidding
Russ

How to overcome fear when faced with a tough decision

I was about to jump… but the 50-foot drop to the rocks below caused me to pause. “Just step out to the edge and jump away from the edge.” My zip-line guide made it sound so simple. I’d just seen 6 others do it and walk away without a scratch, but now it was my turn. I was with my family on our summer vacation taking a zip line tour at Zip Adventures in Colorado.

This stop was called “The Canyon Plunge” and although our zip line tour guides said it was optional, everyone was lining up to do it. This was not a zip line, but a free fall jump off of a cliff. I tried to calm my nerves by talking with Chris, the guide who had just harnessed me into both auto-belays. I asked him, “Do you use two belays for redundancy?” He smiled at me and said, “Exactly… and each one alone can belay 280 pounds. That’s 560 all together…” He gave me a quick once over with his eyes and with a smile he finished his sentence, “I think we’re good.”

Whether you’ve ever jumped off a cliff before or not, I think we’ve all been in a position where we’ve had something at risk and we had to pause before we took our next step. Whether you’re a salesperson, an executive, a volunteer coordinator, a teacher, a parent, a project manager, or an engineer… we will all play the role of the leader when we’re required to choose a next step for our own story.

Here’s what I’ve discovered about making those tough decisions. I’ve learned these steps by reflecting on the actions of leaders I’ve had the honor to work with in my own career. Their tough decisions were tough because there was something at risk. They had something at stake… something to gain but potentially something to lose. We can all learn from these steps. I hope you find the words of encouragement you need to take your next step… because it’s time to jump.

5 Steps for Making Risky Decisions

1. Recognize the Fear

Fear is not a weakness. Please hear me… FEAR IS NOT A WEAKNESS! Fear is one of your senses. Losing one of your senses would be a disadvantage to overcome or a weakness. When you have all your senses you are stronger. Fear is one of your senses. So when you have fear in a situation, just recognize it. Thank your mind for doing what it’s supposed to do… alert you when you should take notice of the situation.

2. Know the Real Risk and Payoff

The only reason we have fear in a situation is because something is at risk and we don’t want to lose what is at risk. In my example of stepping off the cliff, I was thinking about losing my health (e.g. broken bones, etc.) or my life! In your tough situations, slow down and reflect on what is actually at risk here. Know what you stand to lose but also know what you stand to gain! Think about the reason why you’re willing to risk. What do you have to gain? Then, move quickly to the next step!

3. Devise a Plan to Mitigate

Now, answer this question… How can you reduce that risk? Can you make one more phone call before you submit your pricing proposal? Can you talk to a mentor before you present your quarterly business review to the executives? Can you put a contingency plan in place in case the vendor can’t deliver on your tight timeframe? Can you put some pillows on the floor before you jump off the top bunk bed? Can you connect a second belay to the jumpers before they jump off the cliff?

4. Believe in your Plan

This step can be a tough one because it’s a mental game you’ll play with yourself. This ugly question will rise up in your brain, “But… can I trust my plan?” Here’s how I’ve learned to deal with this question. Your brain will try to take you back to the original risk.

For me on the cliff it was… “You’re risking your life!” But I had to counter that thought with the new risk… the mitigated risk. “No, that’s not true!” With the 4 carabiners attached to me, the two support lines, the two auto belays each able to handle 280 pounds, and the benefit of seeing 6 others go in front of me successfully… my risk is not my life. My new risk was much smaller… and just think of what I had to gain! The thrill, the excitement, the fun, the story to tell!

5. JUMP!

Now comes the fun part. You’ve addressed the biggest risk.

You’ve got a plan to reduce your risk exposure.

You know the payoff.

Now enjoy the ride.

JUMP!

So What Do We Do Now?

We can all implement these steps when we arrive at the forks in the road of our own career… or when we arrive at the 50-foot cliffs. Just like many things in life, it may be simple but that doesn’t mean it’s easy! Just knowing the process for addressing the tough decisions isn’t enough. We need to be willing to implement the plan.

It’s been said that people are either in a tough situation right now, they’re coming out of tough situation, or they’re about to go into one. Regardless of your current status, use this process to address the forks in your road. Remember, your story would have no movement if you weren’t making decisions that included some risk. It’s time to move your story along… It’s time to make the decision… It’s time to choose! Let’s go!

It’s time to jump…
Relationships aren’t easy, but that’s also what makes them so rewarding when they’re working well! What I appreciated most from Dr. Gottman’s research are the four predictors he found for doomed relationships. He calls them…

The Four Horsemen of Apocalyptic Relationships

I’m no expert on Dr. Gottman’s research, but I can share with you what I’ve learned. Then, if you’d like to investigate his research further, I’d recommend you read his blog or contact him directly. Gottman points out, “Our research has shown that it’s not the appearance of conflict, but rather how it’s managed that predicts the success or failure of a relationship.”

Dr. Gottman conducted numerous studies with thousands of couples and could eventually predict (with 90% accuracy) whether or not a couple would divorce! After a 14-year longitudinal study observing emotional connection, they were also able to predict when a couple would divorce! Throughout this research, Gottman found four natural predictors of divorce. Regardless of marriage, I can see how these same predictors can be applied to our relationships with close friends and colleagues.

Are there any Antidotes?

Yes! But before you read any further, please know one thing… the antidotes only work on yourself. You can’t use these antidotes to “fix” the other person. Please understand you can never do that and even if you try… you are walking dangerously close to a very thin line called manipulation. You’re attempting to influence someone else to do something they would not normally do on their own and YOU are the one to benefit. That is manipulation and that is wrong.

Gottman points out how each of the horsemen can be taken down, but only if you are willing to make changes in yourself. Here are the four horsemen and the antidote for each.

1st Horseman – Criticism

This is when you are critical of the person instead of their actions and decisions. One of the first tools we teach new leaders is how to separate the person from the bad behavior. If you allow the person to be the issue instead of the bad behavior, you are allowing the first horseman to enter the picture. This first horseman alone will not destroy a relationship, but it paves the way for the other three to enter.

Antidote: Personal Positive Needs

Instead of lashing out with accusations and criticisms of the other person, change your language. You can do this by mentally separating the behavior from the person. Don’t allow yourself to see the person as the problem. The problem is the problem, so work the problem! Then, express your personal feelings for a positive need, instead of lashing out at the person.

Don’t say… “You never listen. You’re always focused on what you want.”

Instead say… “I’m feeling left out of this conversation. Can we talk about my needs for a minute?”

“

The problem is the problem, so work the problem!

2nd Horseman – Contempt

This horseman doesn’t even need words to make himself known. Contempt will show up in a facial expression, rolling of the eyes, smirk of the mouth, undermining comments, or even name calling. This is when you not only disagree with an opinion or suggestion, you actually disagree with who this person is at the core! Gottman found that this is the single biggest predictor of a divorce in couples. These people also tend to be more susceptible to illness due to their weakened immune systems!

Antidote: Appreciation

Remember, Gottman said this horseman alone is the number one predictor of relationships that would end in divorce. Let’s all make sure we have this antidote handy! When you find yourself in contempt of another person, slow your conversation and take time to find something you appreciate in the other person. Appreciation leads to respect, which becomes a foundation for building trust, and trust enables every other aspect of the relationship to improve.

Don’t say… “You’re never happy unless you get your way. You’re manipulative and selfish.”

Instead say… “I appreciate your creativity and innovation when we’re discussing future plans. You’ve always got unique perspectives and ideas.”

3rd Horseman – Defensiveness

This is one horseman we all seem to fall back on quickly when we feel like someone is casting blame our way. This posture is a 1st generation descendant from selfish pride and original sin. When God asked Adam about eating the fruit he gets defensive and immediately blames two people… “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Wow! He blames God and Eve in one sentence! When we feel accused, we get defensive!

Antidote: Accountability

This one is so much easier said than done. As I tell my kids. “It’s like many things in this world… it’s simple, but it’s not easy!” The simple answer is to own it. Without taking the accusation personally, own your mistakes.

Don’t say… “Whatever! You’re always blaming me for everything.”

Instead say… “I know I’m to blame. I’d appreciate if we can both talk more about this in the future so we can avoid any issues.”

4th Horseman – Withdrawal

My name for this is “the festering wound.” When the first three horsemen have made appearances in a relationship, withdrawing from a conversation can morph them into three raging warlords. Our minds begin to speculate what the other person is thinking. We construct narratives in our mind and I think we can all admit, those stories tend to go down a very dark path.

I see this horseman providing strength to the first three. If you don’t seek out opportunities to create constructive conversations, withdrawal will provide the fuel to keep this war raging toward a destructive ending.

Antidote: Self-Soothing

What does “self-soothing” mean? It means “take a temporary break” without dismissing the entire conversation. Get out of your situation and do something that takes your mind off the conversation and soothes your mind. As a conflict response strategy, this form of avoidance is meant to be temporary. It’s NOT a permanent solution. This is a temporary break and both parties know it’s only a break. It’s not a permanent dismissal.

“I know we’re not done here, but I need a break. Can we please pick up this conversation tomorrow when we’re both ready to discuss this further?”

I can speak from my own experience, just knowing these four horseman and their antidotes doesn’t make it much easier to implement them, but it’s a start. My biggest struggle is to keep my emotions in check and remain in the conversation, instead of letting the horsemen run wild through my mind.

Here’s to a great 2018 with no relationship horsemen in it!

All the best,

We never seem to have trouble putting off things that feel like work. On the contrary, if we think its going to be enjoyable, it is pure torture to wait one more second for it! I’m sure you’ve heard of the Stanford marshmallow experiments focused on studying delayed gratification. Children are offered one marshmallow they can eat right now, but if they wait 15 minutes to eat it, the attendant will give them another one! One now or two later?

This experiment has been replicated by others many times, all finding the same results. Delayed gratification is a struggle for us all, at varying degrees. I laugh just watching the kids’ faces.

We tend to put things off when we the reward is not going to be immediate. This is called Temporal Discounting. If we see how the effort today will produce a greater benefit for us tomorrow, we are more likely to consider doing the work now. In his book Stumbling on Happiness, Dan Gilbert shows how we make decisions based more on today instead of trying to empathize with our future self and tomorrow. In other words, “One year from today, will you be glad you made this decision today?”

When the future rewards are not seen as greater than today’s reward, we create the perfect environment for procrastination. In one sense, our predicament is just two sides of the same coin. The answer to delaying a reward today or doing something difficult today is discovering the “why” behind each one.

1. Focus on “the why” to create movement

This requires you to know WHY you should do something or WHY you should put off an immediate reward for a greater future reward. The stronger the why, the more likely you’ll succeed. Make sure you have a plan and then start moving by fueling your movement with “Why.”

With a little help from Simon Sinek and his popular book Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action we can better identify our “Why” with 4 questions:

Why is this important to me?

Why is this important to others?

Why should this be done now?

What will happen now and in the future if I (do / don’t do) this?

2. Organize by Urgency vs. Importance

Next, if you can get all of your tasks organized and ranked by urgency and importance, it becomes easier to execute the tasks. One customer I worked with years ago admitted to using her email inbox as her to-do list and prioritizing the tasks by which email arrived first! Dwight D. Eisenhower was credited with using a simple process for determining priorities. The method simply differentiated between important and urgent. If all your efforts are determined by what is due next, you are managing your time by urgency. When you manage your to-do list by urgency, your list is actually managing you!

3. Now get to work!

The final step is to just do it. Nike would be proud of you! With steps 1 and 2 completed, I know I feel much more energized to just Do the Work, (excellent book to help you by Stephen Pressfield.) It’s not going to get done without you, so you might as well execute your plan.

Perceived Risk!

When we see the risk as being greater than the potential reward, we will find ourselves frozen in “analysis paralysis.” We end up overanalyzing the situation and ultimately doing nothing. Three steps you can use to overcome agonizing:

Know what’s at risk

Determine the odds of success or failure

Just make a decision

Understand that the uneasy (agonizing) feeling inside can be reduced by simply making a decision. The longer you put off decisions of any magnitude, the more the uneasiness weighs on you. As more and more decisions get put on hold (procrastinating! but that will be next week’s blog post), the more those feelings begin to pile up.

1. What’s really at risk?

We like it when life is predictable because then we feel in control. I can prove you like predictability! I am betting you like music. I don’t know what kind of music, but you like music! What is music? it is a series of patterns repeated. It includes variety (which we also love!) and it includes patterns (predictability!)

Even if you’re hearing a song for the first time, you can predict the next note in the melody. Even though you are only predicting the future by a split second, we are still predicting what is coming next. Because we can predict music, it is calming to us. This is why people have said, “Music calms the savage beast.” I don’t think they were actually talking about a real beast, I think they were talking about our internal irritability.

Ask yourself some of these questions:

What’s truly at risk with this opportunity?

Are you risking your job? your life? your commission? your sale? your team? your bonus? your reputation as a strong leader? your budget?

Seriously, what’s at risk?

Sometimes when we realize there isn’t much at risk, we’re more willing to actually make our decision and move forward.

2. What are the odds of each outcome?

Knowing what is at stake is just the first step. Next, we need to think about the probability of each outcome. In other words, are you positioned well to succeed or is it a long shot? While we won’t always need to get into a statistical analysis to figure the exact probability of success (I’m picturing C-3PO from the Star Wars movies always giving the odds of survival to Han Solo.) If you have done what you needed to position you and your team well, then the odds may already be in your favor. Knowing the probability of success is higher can help move you toward a decision.

While you may not have a droid present to give you the exact odds, you can do your homework to see if you are positioned well. As I look back on my personal selling history I can see opportunities I lost where I should have known I was not positioned well.

For example, one opportunity I was never given an opportunity to speak to the actual decision maker. All information was collected from a direct report and then sent to the decision maker. In addition, all the questions from me were focused on the proposal details and the pricing. That is not a good sign. They are most likely using your bid to negotiate a price with their preferred vendor… lesson learned and never forgotten!

3. Just do it

After you’ve done your homework to prepare, you know what is at risk and you know the probability of success, you’re ready to pull the trigger. Prior to doing that, most people will fall into a risk analysis one more time. For me and my sales example above, now I know if I’m not positioned well then I’ll make the decision to pull out of the bidding. This saves me and my team the time of chasing a losing opportunity.

This is when an internal dialogue to remind you of all the preparation can be helpful. You need to have faith in something. For me, it’s God. I trust that he has the outcome in his hands. (Jeremiah 29:11) That doesn’t mean I do nothing and wait, it means I do all the things I should do, to the best of my ability and I allow him to take it from there. For you, your trust might be in something else.

Trust and go…

For you, your trust may be in your training or your developed abilities. You’ve been trained. You have the experience. You have the support group around you. You know that regardless of the outcome, you will learn from the experience. Which means, you will always walk away with value from every decision you make. Go ahead and take that step.

Next week is the final topic and one I’m sure we are all aware of… procrastinating!

See you next week!
Immediately, the speculation in your mind begins to torment you. “What happened? Why haven’t they called? What did I do wrong?” Every question points you toward a feeling of loss. This is the voice of resistance and it’s your first mental hurdle. You have begun to catastrophize! (Still not sure if that’s a real word, but we might just make it one!)

The first mental hurdle we must learn to overcome is the future catastrophe that isn’t even real. It’s a false future designed by the enemy to keep us in our place. As Steven Pressfield points out in his manifesto, Do the Work, resistance is very real. It is an enemy to progress. The enemy begins his assault on your mind with catastrophizing. So let’s talk about how we can overcome this first hurdle.

Step 1: Awareness

I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is a detective with the Austin Police Department. He’s an amazing individual with a heart for the community and a passion to serve. He told me that a constant struggle is trying to balance his training to react instinctively versus his training to slow down and be totally aware of misinterpretations. (i.e. is he reaching for a gun or a cell phone?) He said the key for him is to constantly remind himself to slow down enough to increase his awareness. For us to overcome the future catastrophes we create in our minds, we need to do the same thing. Slow down and think.

Sales Solution: When your sales opportunity appears dead to you but you have not received a final “no” from the customer, you should recognize this as catastrophizing. This is where a good sales manager or a friend outside the situation can be helpful. Regular reviews of your sales opportunities with your manager can help you walk through the next steps and recognize when you are catastrophizing.

Leader Solution: Leaders are focused on the future and where the team is going. If the future seems like nothing but a train wreck, the leader needs to talk to someone. There is always a choice that can be made today to change the trajectory and the destination of the team tomorrow. Having a mentor to talk to will help you find your next step.

Step 2: Know your Location

Our choices create results, which are strung together over time to create a story… our story. And our story is just one of many which cross paths with others to create a rich tapestry of activity. My point in all this? Nothing sits in isolation. Once you know you are catastrophizing and the enemy is creating the images of a false future in your mind, you next need to know where you are in this storyline. Plot your location by noticing what brought you to this place. Then, from this point, you can plan a logical future and avoid the false future catastrophizing created.

Sales Solution: Both buying and selling occurs as a process. This process can happen in a matter of seconds or take 18 months to complete. Figure out where you are in your sales process and where your buyer is in their process. Then you’ll know your options for next steps. If they’re focused on satisfying their needs or the specifics of your solution, you are early in the sales process. If they’re focused on your price or the risks of saying yes/no, then you are near the end of the process.

Leader Solution: Leaders, by definition, are going somewhere. Think about it. If the team is going nowhere, you don’t need a leader. Go back to the original starting place and the new destination you set. From there, you created a plan to move toward that destination. If you never created milestone goals along the way, do that now. Your team needs to see small victories and progress along the way. Cort Dial, leadership consultant and author of Heretics to Heroes, points out that transparency from the leader in communicating progress will keep the team focused on success.

Step 3: Gather More Information

In business, information has the same shelf-life as lettuce. In two weeks it’s gone bad. If you’re not gathering new information on a regular basis, you’ll end up making decisions based on yesterday’s situation, not today’s.

Sales Solution: As a sales professional, call on all of your contacts to update your information. If something has changed, you can adjust your sails. If nothing has changed but your sale has stalled out on the final decision, they are most likely stuck on the evaluation of risk. Remind them of the project objectives and your delivery assurances. They want to avoid their own catastrophizing and they need you to help eliminate risk.

Leader Solution: Share new information with your team as you are able. Without consistent and complete updates, the team will naturally begin to speculate the future based on what they know. As Pressfield points out, we have a real enemy we are fighting. Resistance will always appear to slow you down and leading your team toward catastrophizing is one of his favorite tactics.

This is just the first of four mental hurdles, but it all starts with this one. you already know this is true. We will never make any attempt to change if we are not aware of what we’re doing. Recognize the enemy… the enemy of RESISTANCE!

Don and his co-author had written a book called Cut the C.R.A.P. and Resolve Your Problems. Kinda catchy, isn’t it! As psychologists they found that many of their patients could solve their own problems if they could just get beyond 4 mental hurdles… the CRAP in their minds.

In 2003, after several lunches and conversations, Don asked if I thought their methodology could be applied to the professional sales process. After reading their book, I could see how these same hurdles torment the struggling sales professional. The publisher wanted to create a series of books based on a Cut the C.R.A.P. and ________________ model. They already had the second book title in mind. It would be called Cut the C.R.A.P. and Make the Sale. Don asked if I’d be willing to write this sequel and I agreed.

What are the 4 mental hurdles?

All of us struggle with these four hurdles at one time or another. Each of these can rear it’s ugly head and absolutely kill our forward momentum.

Catastrophizing

I honestly think Don made this word up, but it holds so much truth in it. This is a form of chronophobia, or fear of the future. This is when you assume a future catastrophe is likely or even imminent if you proceed on your current course of action. The sheer anxiety of the potential future state stops you in your tracks.

Rationalizing

This one really is a word. I checked. The layman’s term for this is “making excuses.” After we make a decision to act or not act, we justify our decision in our mind. For sales professionals and leaders, supporting your poor behavior or actions with rationalized excuses will erode your success.

Agonizing

This hurdle creates a type of apathy or inertia. There is no movement. The mental anguish of the internal struggle prevents you from making a decision. The major struggle is with risk. If the risks are seen as too great, it becomes safer to just not decide. As a result, nothing happens and agonizing over the decision continues.

Procrastinating

Anyone else familiar with this one? It’s okay – you can put your hands down now. Me too, by the way. I’m not going to tell you when I’m writing this post. Most of us are very familiar with putting off something until later. A better question is how can we overcome this hurdle so that important items don’t get left until the very last minute?

How can I overcome each hurdle?

Over the next four weeks I’m going to address each of the mental hurdles, one per week. I guess I could have said, over the next four weeks I’ll be giving you a bunch of CRAP. But, for some reason that didn’t sound so good. I do have a marketing degree and I think I just put it to good use with that judgement call.

Anyway, next week we will address the first hurdle. The one with the non-word label: Catastrophizing. See you next week!

I’ve had plenty of situations in my career where the stakes were high and I was expected to perform. Earlier in my career as a Business Development Manager, I remember my first contract negotiation where I casually showed up to represent our company while three seasoned corporate attorneys showed up for the customer. I was thoroughly underprepared and outclassed in every way for that meeting. Needless to say, I felt out of control and stressed.

So what can we do to stay in control and actually benefit from a stressful situation? There are four key things we can change: our resources, our beliefs, our actions, and our reactions.

1. Increase your resource levels with training or leverage others on your team

A simple definition of stress is when the demands placed on you (e.g. a major contract negotiation) are greater than your resources (e.g. zero experience with large contract negotiations). In my negotiation example, the demands of the situation required a greater level of experience and knowledge (resources) to perform well. I learned my lesson. In our next meeting with the customer I brought one of our corporate attorneys with me. My stress was definitely reduced.

2. Change your beliefs to see stress as your body’s positive response

A research study published in 2012 observed nearly 30,000 people for eight years. The focus was on major stressors and their perception of stress as either good or bad for their health. There was a strong correlation between those who thought stress was bad for their health and their higher likelihood of mortality. In other words, if we positively believe that what we feel on the inside during a stressful situation is actually our body preparing us to deal with the situation, we are more likely to benefit from the situation with better health.

3. Change the way you act by serving others

A research study done at the University of Buffalo followed 846 individuals who had experienced recent significant stressful situations. The subjects who spent more of their time helping others (service projects, charity, etc.) had a profoundly higher level of health after the stressful situation. “Our conclusion,” Michael Poulin, Assistant professor of psychology said, “is that helping others reduced mortality specifically by buffering the association between stress and mortality.”

You’ve probably heard the term “servant leadership” and now you have the science that shows you may actually be improving your health when you do that. Make time to assist and serve others and it will make a positive difference in their life and yours.

4. Change the way you react to stress by leveraging your support group

In her TED Talk, Social Psychologist Kelly McGonigal points out that during a stressful situation, one of the stress hormones released in the brain is Oxytocin. This hormone has been referred to as the “cuddle hormone” because it actually stimulates our brains to reach out to others for support. According to her meta-research, this hormone is also a repair hormone that will help repair the body and the heart after the stressful situation. While it may be a nostalgic metaphor to think of the leader as an eagle flying alone, don’t fight science by trying to do everything by yourself. Know who your support group is and reach out to them in your stressful situations. You can actually use stressful situations to develop your relationships.

Which of these four methods have you used?
