Howdy from Texas! I’m Russ Peterson Jr. and I’m the co-founder and Managing Director of iSpeak, Inc., also the co-author of Corporate Ovations: Your roadmap to better presentations (Discovery Tree Press, 2013) and the author of Cut the C.R.A.P. and Make the Sale (DC Press, 2003.) Over the past 25 years I’ve worked for small companies, I’ve worked for Fortune 500 companies, and I’ve owned my own companies.  In each of my roles I loved to observe other people’s success and figure out what made them successful.  One constant I found in every situation was communication.  Each person excelled at communication and it contributed to their success.  I became a student of communication.

(Stevie Awards – 2009 Gold, 2012 Bronze, 2014 Gold, 2016 Silver Stevie Awards).  I began blogging in 2016 because I wanted to hear directly from you and I wanted to share what I’ve learned from my research, failures and successes.  If I’m able to help you achieve your goals while avoiding some of the mistakes I’ve made, then we can call it a success.

My Observation and My Question…

Over the past 25 years, I’ve worked with leaders around the world and I observed something interesting. Many managers would rise in their organizations quickly, while others struggled to advance. Some of those fast risers would then stall out in a mid-management career. They were passed over for promotions into senior leadership. There was always one skill that consistently separated the advancement of some from the others.  It was a unique ability to lead others through meaningful interactions with other people. Now my question was, “How do they do that?” Over the past 25 years I’ve found some answers and I want to share them with you.

What’s this Blog all about?

Leaders can have vision but if they can’t communicate it to others, the vision will never become reality.  My blog is all about leveraging communication to give voice to the vision.  You’ll find discussions, ideas, and inspiration on leadership, communication, conflict, influence, change, attitude, and relationships.  My hope is that you’ll be challenged by what you read, you’ll discover answers to your questions, and you’ll be inspired to implement positive change.

I’m not claiming to know it all.  Just ask my wife! I’m still learning just like all of us.  There’s still a lot of questions for us to explore and a lot of answers to discover. So, I hope you’ll join me in this leadership conversation so we can all continue to improve how we serve others with a more effective leadership voice.

My Biography

I’m currently the co-founder and Managing Director for iSpeak, Inc. We began iSpeak in 1998 with the purpose to research and create content for developing the communication skills of business professionals and leaders. We are based out of Round Rock, Texas (Austin area) and our customers span the globe. I’ve delivered my communication workshops in places like Singapore, Malaysia, Romania, Germany, Amsterdam and all over North America. iSpeak is an award-winning organization for our services and our record growth. (2010 & 2011 Aggie 100 Award, 2014 Global Business of the Year – Round Rock Chamber).

In 1991 I graduated from Texas A&M University with a marketing degree and my friend and I started our first professional company together, FutureTech Training. We provided technical training on computer hardware, software and operating systems. After growing that company to three cities in Texas, we sold our business to a larger international training organization. Before jumping into iSpeak, Inc. full time, I worked for Fortune 500 organizations like Level(3) and CSC (Computer Sciences Corporation) in Business Development and sales leadership roles.

My Family

Russ and Cheree PetersonI’m a blessed man to be sharing this life journey with the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. Cheree keeps me grounded in truth and provides me with the support and encouragement I need at times. She is a constant. She’s my lighthouse always pointing me to true North. She’s also an accomplished CPA, a talented photographer (she took many of the photos on this website), and an incredible mother to our two amazing children (of course I’m biased, wouldn’t you be?).

I’m also a Christian who believes deeply in servant leadership through living out my core values centered on Him.  I struggle to do this just like everyone else and if you read my blog posts, you’ll get to know me quickly.  My promise to you is that I will share my faults and my lessons learned and I will always give you my best.

      Thanks for you comments. What I’ve found helpful is recording my thoughts when they come up (in a journal, in a Word DOC, in Evernote, in WordPress as a draft, etc.) Then, I set a day/time each week to do my blog writing. Since I have ideas already recorded, I pick one the night before, then when I hit my designated time, the writing seems to flow more. I hope that helps you some. All the best, Russ

      I seem to be the most productive when I do three things:
      1. Have a scheduled block of time for writing each week (mine is Mondays from 9AM to 12Noon)
      2. Capture your ideas and research for blog posts whenever they hit you or you find them (record them in something like Evernote)
      3. Ignore everything else during your writing time (that means turn off social media, email and your phone.)
